I Tried It: Green Smoothies (And I don’t like the green stuff)

I must preface this post by saying that I’m not the healthiest person out there. In fact, I shy away from majority of green vegetables, and that has been true for most of my life.  I am very picky when it comes to food and it takes me a really long time to become open to trying something new that my taste buds aren’t ridiculously already used to.It’s not every day that I bust out my smoothie maker and dare to make something different from the only thing I know: banana smoothies.  But I’ve noticed a lot of hype around green smoothies and one day I felt… daring. This is for all you greenfoodphobes out there.

What made things easy  was learning that green smoothies don’t involve 100 different ingredients. This DIY smoothie inspired by rebeldietitian.us has only three: Handful of spinach leaves, 1 banana, a few slices of cucumber.

That’s right, three simple ingredients to bring me one step closer to health. It also helped knowing that I already had these ingredients in my fridge.

The baby spinach included in the drink contains many essential vitamins such as Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, folate, and iron. Consuming spinach helps to maintain normal blood pressure levels, boosts metabolism, strengthens the digestive system, and provides neurological benefits. Click here to learn more about its nutritional value. The banana adds just enough sweetness to the mix and is full of potassium and other essential nutrients. Cucumbers also have their health benefits. They help you to stay hydrated, reduce inflammation, and maintain a healthy weight. To learn more about their nutritional value, check out this article.

Now to answer the most important question: How did it taste? For someone who is used to take-out, sweets, and salty foods, it was actually quiet delicious. It is just the right balance between being sweet and being way too earthy tasting. Now I have this perfectly easy and healthy new summer recipe that not only tastes great but it’s one I’m willing to try over and over again. That’s a win in my book.

Have you tried green smoothies before? How does homemade compare to buying them at a juicing place? What’s your take on them? Share your thoughts with me in the comments section below.
