As part of our “I Tried It” series, contributor Meg Rotter did the detox diet made popular by Dr. Oz. See her thoughts and personal recommendations.

Our lives are busy which can make being healthy difficult. On a Monday night after a full day of work the idea of cooking or exercise can seem like a daunting task. In order to motivate myself I did a three-detox and I propose you do the same. For three days only consume all-natural foods, sweat for at least 50 minutes and avoid most caffeinated beverages (green tea being the one exemption). Based on Dr. Oz’s three-day detox, this cleanse will remove toxins that are currently plaguing the body’s system and may help shed pounds.

The detox diet has become a popular weight-loss fad over the past few years. However, according to some experts, cleanses can positively impact physical health by resulting in more energy, better blood circulation and a stronger immune system. As the toxins leave the body brain fog can decrease. Sleeping patterns and memory become better. Additionally, the elimination of toxins helps reduce blemishes and can prevent premature aging of skin.

Each day of the detox requires four smoothies: one for breakfast, one for lunch, one for dinner and one as a snack. To purchase the necessary ingredients for this cleanse I went to a local grocery store that had reasonable prices. Altogether, my shopping bill amounted to around $20.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
• 3 cups blueberries
• 3 cups raspberries
• 2 mangos
• 1 pineapple
• 2 green apples
• 4 lemons
• 3 bananas
• 2 limes
• 6 cups kale
• 1 avocado
• 3 cucumbers
• 1 cup spinach
• 9 stocks celery
• 4 cans of coconut water
• 6 tablespoons flax seeds (whole)
• 3 green tea bags
• 3 multivitamins

BREAKFAST
Start with a cup of green tea with half a slice of lemon. The lemon juice will help to flush your body while the green tea offers a touch of that much-needed morning dose of caffeine. If you suffer from caffeine withdrawals later in the day, help yourself to another cup. After your tea, start with your first meal: the breakfast smoothie. This smoothie is designed to reduce bloating and give your body energy for its day.

BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE
• 1 cup water
• 1 tbsp flax seed
• 1 cup raspberries
• 1 banana
• ¼ cup spinach

For lunch prepare to load your body with tons of energy. This smoothie was my least favorite but it did a good job at keeping me full. I grew to have a love-hate relationship with it. Tip: To make this smoothie easier to drink, blend the mixture for a long time so that it becomes more of a juice than a smoothie.

LUNCH SMOOTHIE
• 3 stalks celery
• 1 cup kale
• 1 cucumber
• ½ green apple
• ½ lime
• 1 cup pineapple
• ½ cup water

DINNER
The dinner smoothie is all about hydration and restoring electrolytes. Also, due in part to the avocado, this smoothie will offer the necessary fiber for your body. Along with the drink, take a multivitamin to give additional nutrients to your diet.

DINNER SMOOTHIE
• ½ cup mango
• ½ cup blueberries
• 1 can coconut water
• 1 cup kale
• ¼ of an avocado
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 tbsp flax seed

SNACK
For a snack, repeat your favorite smoothie. You may have to buy additional ingredients based on your preference of smoothie.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

After making it through the third day, begin easing back into regular foods. Be conscious of the sacrifices you made throughout the past three days and reflect it into your diet. Gorging on fast food or frozen pizza may be all that you want to do but it will reverse the effects of your cleanse.
