Antioxidants. We hear a lot about them but what are they exactly and where do we find them?

ANTIOXIDANTS: THE 411

An antioxidant is a nutrient found in food and to fully appreciate what it does you have to understand how the body operates.

All of our cells require oxygen to thrive. As cells receive oxygen, free radicals are also produced. Free radicals often get a bad rap but many don’t realize they help white blood cells destroy pathogens and bacteria in the body. The downside is that some are unstable. They lack an even number of electrons and search out electrons in the body they can steal, causing tissue damage and potentially disease.

This is where antioxidants come in. These kick butt nutrients act like workmen, picking off free radicals floating around the body while also repairing the damage they’ve made.  They’re also thought to help strengthen the immune system, as well as fight off infection.
