Looking to up your knowledge about the food industry and nutrition in general? Of course you are! And fortunately,there’s a movie for that. A lot of movies, in fact. In the last ten years some amazing documentaries have come out regarding the above and some of them are pretty darn good. If you’ve ever wanted to know more about GMOs, why some people go vegan or the link between certain foods and disease, check out our top seven pick of food films you must watch. You can find them all on Netflix or Hulu.

1. FOOD MATTERS

Told through a series of interviews with medical experts, this fast paced documentary explores the epidemic of chronic disease in America, the role our diets play, and the current practices in the food and drug industry that keep the public ill.

Unexpected Highlights: A comprehensive breakdown of the the drug industry and how it became the giant it is today.

2. HUNGRY FOR CHANGE

Yes, Doritos are more tempting than broccoli but why?  Hungry for Change explores the science behind the addictive nature of certain foods, as well  as exposes the practices some companies take to make sure you keep buying their products. You’ll also learn about the healing power of natural food ( expect some amazing stories) and gain helpful tips on how to wean yourself off  processed junk.

3. FORKS OVER KNIVES

Can a plant based diet reverse heart disease or diabetes?   Yes, according to the research of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and Dr. T. Colin Campbell. The film explores these experts work, as well as the claim that a vegan diet will eradicate the obesity epidemic and lower the incidence of chronic disease.  Expect copious references to medical studies and some eye-opening info that may keep you from chugging from the milk container.

4. FAT, SICK & NEARLY DEAD

This popular documentary follows Joe Cross, a successful Australian business man, as he embarks on a juice fast to cure his autoimmune disease. Does it work? You’ll have to watch. We’ll tell you this much, you’ll want to buy your own juicer by the time it’s done.

Prepare to be horrified. Food Inc. takes you behind the scenes of how our food is really made and it isn’t pretty. We’re talking cramped chicken coops, unsanitary slaughter houses and unsavory tactics to make popular food popular. Be warned, you won’t look at your local grocery store the same again.

6. GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD: PANACEA OR POISON

This documentary is like a GMOs for Dummies and we couldn’t be happier.  You’ll learn what GMOs are, how they came to be, and why you should care. You’ll learn enough to share some very impressive tidbits at your next dinner party.

7. THE ENGINE 2 KITCHEN RESCUE

If you’re looking to change how you cook but don’t know how, this film is a must watch. Firefighter and triathlete, Rip Esselstyn, gives easy to follow tips for adopting a plant based diet anyone can follow. Learn now to read nutritional labels and even cook a few simple recipes.

Unexpected Highlight: Rip takes a couple to the grocery store and shows them how to shop properly. Strangely entertaining and informative.
