Fruit is thought nutritionally superior to juice but when it comes to citrus, a glass of Tropicana may have its value.
In a new study (published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry) researchers looked at the benefits of the orange in comparison to orange juice. While the fruit proved a powerhouse of nutrients, when juiced those nutrients were digested most easily. On the downside, researchers noted that the fruit lost a percentage of its nutrients when processed into the popular beverage.
Takeaway Tip: If you’re rushed a glass of juice can still provide the nutrients your body needs. But drinkers beware: juice has more sugar and lacks the staying power of the whole fruit. Those who are watching their weight should opt for the orange which has fiber and about twenty calories less than OJ.
